Hydrotherapy

Warm water has been used for therapeutic purposes since ancient times particularly where the presence of natural warm water has provided an opportunity for development of spas.

In thermal areas in some parts of the world such as New Zealand or Iceland, the water appears as geysers or bubbles up in hot mud.

Such sources sulphur and other minerals. Ground water is forced to the surface after permeating deeply placed, and hence hotter, rock formations.

Whirlpool baths are tanks or baths of various sizes, the smaller ones are made to accommodate one limb, while larger ones allow the patient to sit.
The whirlpool refers to turbulence produced by an electric pump, or compressed air which mixes air and water into a jet stream.

Another form of hydrotherapy is Contrast baths. They comprise of two water baths at different temperatures, a hotter bath at about 40 - 42 degrees c. Submerge area for about 3-4 minutes and then submerge into a colder one at 15-20 degrees for about one minute. The body is immersed in each of the baths alternatively and is normally begun with the hotter bath.

This cycle is repeated for about 3 - 4 times. It has been said Hyperaemia can be produced if the part of the body is immersed for 10 minutes in the hotter bath before in the cold.

It is said that this could lead to reduced oedema due to vasodilatation and pain relief through the pain gate mechanism.

If you are thinking about hydrotherapy especially contrast baths make sure to consult your local doctor before commencement, this also apply's to all other forms of electro therapy.

It is an excellent form of low impact exercise e.g. swimming, floating, aqua aerobics for this form of low to no weight bearing exercise is excellent for muscle stability, flexibility, strength and increase joint range of movement while at the same time the water provides a minimal resistance against the movement, to strengthen muscle fibres and is too acute for pain to work with exercise against gravity.

Other conditions in my opinion that respond well to Hydrotherapy are:

  • Relaxation of tight muscles
  • Relief of soft tissue strains.
  • Joint stiffness / Arthritic conditions.
  • Increase blood flow.
  • Helps lymphatic flow/drainage.
  • Helps in the movement and deposit of toxins within the body.
  • A general sense of stress relief and a feeling of well being.
